A Conscious Choice

These two beautiful pieces of jewellery called 'A Conscious Choice' were designed and created for the Candescent Project and exhibited at an exhibition in London called ‘Green Gold’ at the Art Workers Guild during London Jewellery Week in June 2009. This exhibition was to profile Oro Verde (Green Gold), the first initiative to certify responsibly mined, small-scale artisanal precious metals. Oro Verde is based in the verdant, rainforest region of Choco in Colombia and works with mining families to ensure that working practices are fair and environmentally friendly, with miners receiving a premium for the gold which is re-invested back into the community and the method of extracting the gold does not involve the use of mercury and cyanide. With funding from Cordaid and Caford, the Candescent Project sponsored Stacey to visit Colombia in March 2009 to assist with the development and research process of the jewellery for the exhibition. Stacey was then commissioned by the Candescent Project to produce jewellery using the gold sourced from Oro Verde and incorporating fairly traded gems that were kindly gifted by Columbia Gem House.

Following this exhibition, Stacey now proudly supports this initiative, offering her customers a conscious choice and welcomes commissions that embrace ethical and ecological sourced materials were ever possible, to create pieces of jewellery made with a conscious and empowering us with the knowledge that a decision made today directly effects the existence and quality of another persons life.
